Hats & Shoes in the Garden
Proper design is vital
A professional Garden Designer has to wear many hats. It’s the huge diversity of the job that I love. Our bigger sites, with retaining walls, steps and movement of tons of earth, means that the structural and civil engineering hats come out, with calculations taking the place of planting plans.
Plants don’t even figure on this type of site – it’s all about types of concrete and stress calcs. Even the smallest garden needs a degree of engineering. It’s critical that paving is laid with the closest attention to detail. I hate it when somebody lays a patio and just cuts the stone when they get to the edge. You should be able to lay a terrace without any cuts at all if it’s planned properly. All gardens – great or small – need a proper design and plans. Sometimes I go out to see a client and they’ve ‘done a drawing’. You know when you’re colouring with your children and they keep going over the edges, and you have to say “That’s lovely darling!”…..well, it’s the same kind of feeling. There are basic design principles for all sizes and shapes of gardens and I can honestly say that every ‘helpful’ drawing ever presented to me consists of a lawn in the middle, flower beds around the outside and perhaps (oh you devil you!) a daring circle in the corner with a summerhouse on it. It’s like me trying to make my own shoes, create my own crockery or build my own car. It’s not what I do. I leave that to the professionals. But I am an expert in my field……You know what’s coming don’t you…….!
Believe me, you have no idea what we could do with your garden; how wonderful it could be; the things that could be achieved.
Go on, give us a call and let us show you a Jimmy Choo of a garden.

We'd love to design your garden this year. Why not find out what's really possible. Just look out of your window and imagine what you could see"
